The carrier was also the Platinum Award winner for Operational Excellence
Cirium, a data and analytic firm serving the travel industry, has released the 2023 Annual On-Time Performance (OTP) Report which analyses and recognizes the world’s airlines and airports who have demonstrated remarkable resilience, navigating through challenges, and adapting to changing market dynamics.
Delta Air Lines once again claims the top spot in terms of OTP, with 84.72% arriving on-time on over 1.5M flight operations. Following closely behind was Alaska Airlines boasting an OTP of 82.25% on over 400,000 flights. That’s good news for an airline that recently experienced a lot of bad publicity when a door blew off one of its planes in mid-flight. American Airlines completed the top three with an 80.61% OTP on over 1.9M flights.
Air Canada, Canada’s largest carrier, had the worst on-time performance among large airlines in North America in 2023, according to the report. The country’s flag-carrying airline landed 63% of its 276,451 flights on time last year, placing it last among the continent’s 10 largest airlines. That means roughly 140,000 planes arrived at the gate more than 15 minutes after scheduled arrival. Canada’s other major airline, WestJet, placed seventh in North America with a score of 69% for 182,296 flights.
In terms of arrival performance, the overall rate for 2023 was 74.45%, with approximately 400,000
more scheduled flights compared to 2022, which had an on-time arrival rate of 74.26%.
For the third year in a row, Cirium also presented Delta with the Platinum Award for Operational Excellence. The Cirium Platinum Award is given to airlines that excel in on-time performance while navigating considerable operational complexities. “Safe, reliable operations led by caring people – that’s how we earn our customers’ trust every day,” said Delta COO Mike Spanos.
Cirium delivers insight, built from decades of experience in the sector, enabling travel companies, aircraft manufacturers, airports, airlines, and financial institutions, among others, to make logical and informed decisions which shape the future of travel, growing revenues and enhancing customer experiences.
