Moana Surfrider Gets a $70M Makeover

From historic charm to modern luxury: Moana Surfrider’s event spaces are being reimagined

For meeting and event planners seeking a blend of historic charm and modern luxury, the Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort & Spa, is undergoing a transformation that promises to elevate the Waikiki experience. As the “First Lady of Waikiki” embarks on a landmark renovation to celebrate its 125th anniversary, planners can anticipate a refreshed and revitalized venue that seamlessly blends timeless elegance with contemporary amenities.

Imagine hosting a gala in a newly unveiled oceanfront event space, accommodating up to 200 guests, or conducting a high-powered executive retreat in the luxuriously renovated Tower Wing, boasting stunning ocean and Diamond Head views. The Moana Surfrider’s multi-phase renovation, slated for completion by early 2026, is meticulously designed to honor its rich history while providing state-of-the-art facilities for today’s discerning event planners.

“As Hawaii’s most iconic hotel, the Moana Surfrider’s renovation is a tribute to its celebrated past and bright future,” says Thomas Foti, General Manager. This project isn’t just about cosmetic upgrades; it’s a deep dive into the resort’s legacy, incorporating design elements that reflect the natural beauty and cultural significance of Waikiki.

The guest room renovations, spanning three distinct wings, offer diverse experiences. The Banyan Wing, the original 1901 structure, will showcase a refined elegance inspired by native limu (seaweed), while the Diamond Wing will embrace Waikiki’s surf culture with vibrant, beach loft-inspired interiors. The Tower Wing will provide a modern beach luxury experience with residential like accommodations. All three wings will be tied together by refreshed corridor spaces, featuring custom carpeting that weaves in motifs of kou lei, the ocean’s movement, and the iconic Banyan Tree.

For planners concerned with aesthetics, the historic lobby’s refresh will maintain its colonial-style Victorian architecture while introducing a lighter, more inviting ambiance. The remodeled front desk area, with its elegant check-in pods and custom light sculpture, will create a grand and welcoming first impression.

The new oceanfront event space, debuting in Fall 2025, is a significant addition for planners. Its prime location and capacity for large gatherings make it an ideal venue for conferences, receptions, and corporate events.

Lisa-Maria Priester and Bev Tagami of WCIT, the design firm behind the renovation, have drawn inspiration from the restorative properties of the surrounding environment, incorporating natural materials, colors, and light to create a biophilic design. Thoughtfully curated artwork from local Hawaiian artists will further enhance the sense of place, adding a unique cultural dimension to every event.

With its strategic location, enhanced amenities, and commitment to preserving its historic charm, the Moana Surfrider’s renovation makes it an irresistible choice for meeting and event planners seeking a truly exceptional venue in Waikiki. The resort will remain open throughout the renovation.
