Maritz Acquires Convention Data Services

The event management giant has strengthened its market position with this strategic acquisition

St. Louis-based Maritz, a prominent player in the meetings and events management sector, has solidified its position with the acquisition of Convention Data Services (CDS) from Freeman. The deal, finalized on July 1st, brings together two industry veterans with a shared dedication to the evolving events landscape.

The acquisition significantly expands Maritz’s market share, particularly in the realm of top-tier trade shows. “This move positions us well for the future,” said David Peckinpaugh, Maritz’s President and CEO. He emphasized the company’s commitment to navigating the shifting expectations and behaviors of event attendees in the digital age.

Maritz has steadily strengthened its presence in the events industry over the past 15 years, starting with the acquisition of Experient. The addition of CDS, a leading provider of registration, on-site, and lead services, further bolsters Maritz’s capabilities, promising accelerated innovation and a broader range of services for clients.

Both companies have assured clients of a seamless transition, with no immediate changes expected in service delivery. Darren Phalen, President of CDS, expressed enthusiasm about the combined expertise of the two organizations, highlighting their potential to address significant industry challenges through collaborative innovation. “The industry will continue to receive the outstanding experience they’ve come to expect from both organizations,” said Phalen. “With so much talent in one
organization, we will lead industry innovation to help solve some of the biggest challenges facing the events industry.”

Freeman, the seller of CDS, expressed confidence in Maritz as the ideal home for CDS and its team. Paul Fletcher, Freeman’s COO of Audio Visual & Event Technology, stated that Freeman remains focused on delivering exceptional event experiences for organizers, exhibitors, and attendees. “We are confident Maritz is the right home for CDS and its talented team,” said Fletcher. “Freeman remains focused on delivering unforgettable experiences to ensure we are best positioned to drive meaningful and impactful events for organizers, exhibitors and attendees.”

This strategic move by Maritz underscores the ongoing consolidation trend in the events industry, as companies seek to leverage synergies and expand their offerings in response to the evolving demands of the market. With its enhanced capabilities, Maritz is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of events management.
